Breaks in employment

Parental Leave

The Parental Leave Acts may entitle an employee to 18 weeks unpaid leave to care for a child under the age of 8 years. The implications for you depend on your work situation and any pension arrangement you may have.

If you are an employee, you are not entitled to continue to accrue retirement benefit during a period of parental leave. However, your service before and after parental leave must be treated as continuous, i.e. you cannot be treated as having left a pension scheme where you are a member.

If you have your own personal pension or Personal Retirement Savings Account you may be able to continue contributing provided your total contributions for the tax year are within the limits permitted by Revenue.
