Getting separated or divorced

Pension entitlements are unlikely to be the most important thing on your mind if you are getting a separation or divorce. But pensions can be significant family assets that you need to take into account.

You should bear in mind that you and your dependants may have benefit entitlements from both your own arrangement, and your spouse's arrangement.

Your pension entitlements and those of your spouse arising from occupational or personal pension arrangements may be affected by separation or divorce.

Very often this may result in splitting these entitlements and sharing them between you and your spouse.

Pension rights cannot be shared out without a court order.
